How did you know you wanted to be an author? I knew I wanted to be an author because of the monumental and historic nature of the Obama presidency. Seeing a black man become president of the United States is one of the two transcendent experiences of my life. It brought me immense joy and excitement and generated the passion that motivated this effort. I could not help myself. I simply had to write how I experienced this historic event and what it meant to me that Obama lifted my people to the peak of their progression from property to people to president.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Find a subject matter you are excited and passionate about and write about it.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I write when I really feel like writing. I do not force it or keep to a schedule. When I feel like it, the words flow from my mind unto the page almost effortlessly. I do get ideas about what to write at odd moments. And when the idea comes, I make sure to write it down in my small pocket notebook so as not to forget it.
What message to you want readers to remember? Barack Obama is destined to be revered as one of America’s greatest presidents despite Trump’s systematic, mindless, mischievous, petty and spiteful attempt to obliterate his legacy.
