How did you know you wanted to be an author?: To be honest, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but being an author wasn't a dream of mine until I co-designed PEERspective. This class has made a difference in the lives of the students with autism and I knew I had to write this book so that other educators could replicate it in their schools and other settings.
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: My best advice is to write about what you love and are passionate about. If you love what you are writing about the process is much easier, more enjoyable and the final product is more authentic.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: I like to leave the house and find a coffee shop so I'm not distracted by things that need to be done at my house (or my family). I also generally write out a draft of what I want each chapter to include because I'm a very visual person and this helps keep me from getting off topic or distracted.
What message do you want readers to remember?: I want them to remember that we must intentionally teach students on the spectrum social skills so that we can help them find success and fulfillment in life. I also want people to always look at people's differences as strengths!
