How did you know you wanted to be an author? I loved writing in high school so I decided to major in English Literature in college. My writing courses, while challenging, were the most rewarding to me.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? As the Nike slogan says: Just do it! You have to face both your fears and your computer! Get something on paper. It may start out very rough, but if you keep at it, rewriting and rewriting, it will morph into something wonderful.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? For me, it’s important to declutter my office and, as much as possible, my mind. If I have piles of papers and paraphernalia all over my office, or a list of life’s minutia waiting to be attended to, I can’t focus on creative writing.
Also, I make it a practice to read my work out loud. That way, I catch things I don’t when I’m just reading silently.
What message to you want readers to remember? I want readers to remember that the worst time in one’s life can ultimately lead to unexpected fulfillment and authenticity.
