How did you know you wanted to be an author?: The further along I traveled in my social work career, the stronger the urge became to tell the stories of the challenges and courage of the people I met along the way. At one point, it seemed the only thing I COULD do. So, I did it!
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: Every one of us has a story to tell. Write what you know. Write what is within you. Give it voice and set it free. You will be so glad that you did.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: I tend to ruminate for weeks about characters and plot, before I can actually start writing. Then it kind of flows.
What message do you want readers to remember?: This book focuses on a grumpy little boy who is afraid of bugs, but instead of facing his fear, he treats the bugs in a very mean way. I want kids to learn that everyone, including bugs, have feelings about being mistreated, and that there are other, much better, alternatives to anger and meanness.
