How did you know you wanted to be an author? I’ve been a bibliophile for as long as I can remember. I started writing my own stories as soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil. In 6th grade I started writing sci-fi stories which explained the extraterrestrial origins of my teachers.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Read the best of what you want to write and keep writing. There are some great blogs and books available about writing techniques as well as classes. Consume them as if your life depended on them. Work in as many fields as possible where you can learn a variety of styles and techniques.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I set up the story and then let the characters take over. I always let them have their way because they never fail to take the story in a more interesting direction. They often get themselves into trouble where I have no clue how they’ll get out of it, but they always figure it out themselves. I’m more of a scribe than an author once the story gets rolling. I get some of my best ideas doing no-brainer chores like vacuuming or weeding where I talk to them in my head. You don’t have to be crazy to be an author but it helps. 😀
What message to you want readers to remember? Doing the right thing is not always easy, but it pays off eventually.
