How did you know you wanted to be an author? After teaching forensic science in high school and college, and having loved Nancy Drew as a kid, and having a talent for story telling, I knew there was a mystery series inside my head just wanting to get on paper.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Read, observe, write down your ideas before you lose them, join a writing circle, make the Internet your best friend for research for writing, publishing and marketing. Sit down and write.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I make outlines. I do a chapter outline, once I have a firm idea for the plot. I indicate in each chapter what research needs to be done. I also indicate which characters appear in each chapter, and then include them in a file for characters. Since all my books are mysteries, I indicate in which chapter each clue appears, and then I do a flow chart for each clue to show where it will end up at the conclusion of the book. Once this is complete (and believe me it changes as need be),I then begin to write the story.
What message to you want readers to remember? I want them to remember that the world is full of opportunities to do good things and exciting things. I especially want girls to see the world as an vehicle to fulfill their most passionate dreams.
