How did you know you wanted to be an author? I guess it’s always been in the very back of my mind but it jumped up and smacked me in the face one day. My son asked me if there was anything I wished I had done in my life. “Write a novel!” popped right out of my mouth. He said, “If not now, when?” I started immediately.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Make a goal to write every day at a set time, blocking out all distraction. Stick to it. If you know you can’t get up from your chair until you have your 3 pages written, words will come. Don’t worry, they can be edited. Revel in your time with your characters.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I like to have my surroundings orderly even if research notes are flooding my work space. I always have water to drink as it seems to help my brain to grow into my story. I pull the plug on my landline, turn off my cell, close my office door and certainly close out my email. I also let people know mornings are for writing. I’ll be happy to chat come afternoon but not in the morning. And I mostly don’t go anywhere in the morning if I can help it. That pattern lets my mind know it’s time to turn on the words and out they come
What message to you want readers to remember? In the stories of our history are countless people who, though they might have seemed ordinary, rose to be extraordinary because their circumstances demanded it. My fictional characters set against the backdrop of history face horrible challenges; the way they deal with those challenges makes for exciting books.
