How Did You Know You Wanted To Be An Author? Through my long career as a psychologist and research advisor, I wrote a lot--none of it fiction! When I retired from that work in 2009, I started writing short stories. I'd always wanted to write a novel--psychologists have plenty of very cool stories to tell! I found I loved writing fiction, though I was nervous about trying a novel. But I did, and my four novels in the Monastery Valley Series have all won awards!
What Is Your Advice For Aspiring Authors? Write a lot, and study our craft. I tried a novel back in my early twenties and didn't care about the rules I'd learned in school. It was crap (and still is--though I have carried it around in a box ever since!). Learn and practice good craft from good teachers--there are plenty of them out there--and when you have got the rules and conventions of great writing in your DNA, feel free to break them.
