How did you know you wanted to be an author?: Ever since I was young, I can remember having words inside me that I could not express with speech, or any other way. It took many years to be able to use my words to get thoughts out. A high school teacher showed me how to read more efficiently. Thank you to all those teachers that got the extra mile by helping their students. My husband spent hours unlocking me from my "prison". He often kids and says he created a monster, as now he can’t stop me. I knew words but they were bottled up inside of me. I know now why all the drama regarding communication, and that is another book. As a young married woman I started to write poetry about my deepest thoughts. The computer revolutionized my writing and I was off and running. I have many things sitting on my computer waiting for the right time. When I feel it, I have to write it. What a wonderful age of technology we live in today as many with learning disabilities can overcome their fears and weaknesses. Previously I had a love for expressing and writing, but I knew I wanted to be an author when I finished my first book. Although they are all very clever and successful, it was written to encourage my grandchildren, especially those with learning disabilities. I wanted to show them that if their Oma could do the impossible, they could too. I dedicated the first book to Josh who is excelling with honour grades and overcoming his obstacles.
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: My advice would be to listen to that inner voice that tells you can do anything you want to. It is the voice of the great creator himself. He can use disabilities and turn them into your strengths. Never give up your dream of expression.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: I write and don’t let anyone read it until I feel released to. I don’t know if it is an insecurity, but I have no problem with it when I feel it is time for project to experience the world.
What message do you want readers to remember?: Writing is a personal victory for me. It took many years of struggling. You might have other things that are stopping you, so be patient. Never give up your dream, it is a special gift from you to the world around you.
