How did you know you wanted to be an author?: I didn't know I wanted to be an author until my kids dared me to write a book. I didn't think I was capable of writing a book until I actually finished one. It wasn't until I started receiving so many awards that I realized that not only did I get to write whatever I want, others were also enjoying my writing.
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: Get on a GoodReads thread, make friends with lots of authors, and learn from them. Volunteer to write on blogs and magazines so that your name becomes well known, and make sure you review lots of books, it's great practice and you will meet a lot of writers.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: When the thought hits I save it and make sure I than record it.
What message do you want readers to remember?: It depends on the book. In Captain No Beard, it's about your imagination and being kind to others. There's also messages about making sure you communicate how you feel. This is reenforced in the "Oh Susannah" series, the early reader chapter books that encourage children to speak up when they're overwhelmed or afraid. The cultural and history books were created to ensure understanding of the different customs and cultures around the world.
