How Did You Know You Wanted To Be An Author? I've been writing since I was a child, mostly in journals but eventually freelance travel and other personal essays. I took a break from writing for others when I went through a dark period--the subject of this book. I felt like I didn't know anything, so how could I write for others? But I kept writing in journals. One day, I realized there was a story to share that might even help others as much as it helped me to write about it.
What Is Your Advice For Aspiring Authors? My motto is "Listen, Play, Write!" Listen means: Pay attention. Notice the world around you, use all your senses, not just your thoughts. Play means to stay curious and willing. Investigate your deepest fears with innocence. Write means, capture what you've seen, what you've learned. Then be courageous and share it. The best way to practice all of these is to join a writing group. These offer us lonely writers support and give us plenty of opportunity to listen, play and write.
