How did you know you wanted to be an author? I didn’t know I wanted to be an author. Characters invaded my brain and insisted their stories be told. I thought I had a mental illness. Characters are very bossy. They name themselves and drive their stories.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Even if you know you’re a good writer, take writing courses where you have a tutor who provides feedback on your writing. You will be amazed at what you don’t know, and when you look back at your early writing, you’ll cringe and then laugh.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?I carry a small notebook everywhere. Characters tell their secrets at the most inopportune moments, and I can’t rely on my memory until I get home.
When I’m stuck on a way forward, I will take to paper and ask… what if this happened, what if that? It helps generate new ideas and I have a lot of aha moments.
What message to you want readers to remember?Even when your life seems bleak, don’t toss in the towel. There is always hope that tomorrow or next week or next year will be better. Don’t wallow. Do something, anything, to change your stituation, and be open to the good people who walk into your life. They arrive for a reason.
