How did you know you wanted to be an author?: When I write (whether a book, story, or contract), I enjoy the process, and time moves at supersonic speed. That’s how I know that writing is something that I’m supposed to do.
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: Two things: (1) Remember that best-selling authors start out as unpublished writers. (2) Edit, edit, edit: good writing requires good editing.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: I take breaks between rounds of edits so that I’ll have fresh eyes: sometimes hours, sometimes days. When editing whole chapters, I tend to mark up a printed copy with a colored pen then enter the changes into the computer version.
What message do you want readers to remember?: Your voice matters, and it can be powerful.
