How did you know you wanted to be an author?: I loved writing as a teenager but I didn’t have many resources to learn from or be encouraged to do so. Fast track twelve years, when I was becoming successful in business, people would compliment my ability to convey a message, emotion, and ultimately teach a life lesson through written word. “You should write a book,” I heard often. I always wanted to but needed that reminder that - I am worthy!
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: To just get your book out there with a team you trust and don’t loose your creative control because you are just starting out and going to want to grow in different directions. As nice as it would be, do not wait for the big glamorous deal, get busy now. That deal will come in due time.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: Surround yourself with people you inspire, people you feel equal too, and people you aspire to be. Get talking with them. Study what you want to write about and use the people around you as “sound boards.” Ponder it, and jot it down as notes whenever it comes to you. My writing is series of free writing. Then, when I am in an organizational mindset, I plan it out. My writing is sparked by events and empathy, it is a creative outlet and sometimes can’t be rushed. Let it flow.
What message do you want readers to remember?: Live without expectation, flow with passion and you will get to where you want and need to be.
