How did you know you wanted to be an author?: I knew I wanted to be an author when I realized I had a story to tell based on my experience in criminal justice. I have learned over the years that many writers who do mysteries and thrillers have a superficial understanding of of the system, having not participated in it on the inside. I felt a duty to educate people on this topic and decided that the medium of novel was the best way to achieve that goal.
What is your advice for aspiring authors?: Ask yourself at the beginning why you want to be an author. I suggest you make your answer something besides selling a lot of books. As you proceed through the process there will be times when you will get discouraged. When this inevitably occurs, return to that goal and allow it to sustain you.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices?: I am a big believer in thorough research. I also try to experience ahead of time all my scenes, even taking pictures of them so I do not have to rely on my memory to recreate them. I think it is important to use composite characters based on people you know. That way you will understand them better and be able to express their thoughts and feelings more effectively. In the end novels are about characters more than plot. Thus you should know your characters like the back of your hand.
What message do you want readers to remember?: Never give up! Allow your purpose in being a writer to nourish your effort.
