How did you know you wanted to be an author? I love reading and watching movies, but have become more and more dissatisfied with the stories that were being told. With so many rattling around in my head, I knew I could do just as good a job, or in many instances, a better one. Once I managed to put my first novel to paper, I was hooked.
What is your advice for aspiring authors? Keep grinding it out. Rare is the author who writes one novel and becomes an overnight success. Keep writing, keep marketing, build a platform… and just when you are about to give up, that’s when you have to buckle down work harder.
Do you have any writing rituals or practices? I prefer to write with the television on in the background. As much as I love silence at points throughout the day, I began my writing career because of my then fiancee’s love of reality television. No longer able to with cope with the torture, and not willing to fight over the remote control, I passed the time by writing my first novel. While I do some writing in my home office, much of it is on the couch with the television still on.
What message to you want readers to remember? I write political thrillers and dramas, and that genre often calls for bringing out the worst in people throughout a story. But there are also great people in this world trying to make it a better place. In a world filled with so much negativity, always try to focus on the positive.
How can fans get in contact with you? I have profile on Goodreads, am on social media, especially Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and have other direct communications option available at www.mikaelcarlson.com.
