Full Book Title: A Closer Look at Islam
Author Name: Syed B Ali
Book Synopsis: Islam has had to take much of the blame for acts of terrorism in the last few decades. For better or for worse, a lot of people have felt some sort of a relationship between Islam and terrorism. Naturally, this has led to a spate of anti-Islam books. Islam has actually been under the microscope for a few centuries. Non-Muslim writers have studied Islam in some depth but their studies have not necessarily been based on historical material acceptable to all Muslims. However, most may not have acted on malice given that the task of studying contrarian readings of Islamic history was huge. It was not until about fifteen years ago that I happened to read some of the more recent titles. To my dismay, I found that in comparison to scholars of the past, there was a greater element of malice in modern writings. The reading public the world over was being misinformed and I honestly felt that this needed to be corrected. I thus began the task of looking closely into cracks in their approach and fortunately, I found quite a few. In quoting verses of the Quran, for example, they cherry-picked verses that suited their purpose, a practice that is clearly misleading. Individual verses can form part of a passage and were often prompted by a historical context. As in other works of literature, a message can go beyond a single sentence or verse. The message of the Quran was therefore not being delivered correctly. Islamic history posed an even bigger problem. There is no single version of accounts acceptable to all Muslims. The first writings are dated some two centuries after Islam had split and historical accounts were (and still are) in a state of serious disrepair and dispute. I understand that critics could not be expected to dig through the massive research required and would therefore fail to have a balanced approach in their works. But at the very least, readers had to be told that the information available to them was not necessarily the most accurate. The books were based on fairly tainted stuff. I thus had a fairly sound basis for my book.
